Stories of Girls’ Resistance

Wakumi Douglas

“I think the thing we’re trying to figure out in terms of resistance is how to create space for healing and care. Which, I will say is something that I’m struggling with and working on. Because we’re in this non-profit, because of the pressures of the work, I find myself if I’m fully honest, I don’t take a lot of time off… I find myself sometimes even questioning whether or not people are sick. People are off taking a sick day and I’m like, are you really sick? You’ve got that deadline. Yes, that’s the way in which that shit lives in me that I need to get out of me. I think part of the resistance is creating a work environment where people have the space and the freedom to care for themselves and to heal. I know I’ve been struggling around that.”
